Spirits in Disguise 2007

Overview of the day - By Morgan Llewellyn

Hello and welcome to the write up of Ultimate Evolution's 2007 tournament - Spirit in Disguise II. Content for this report is provided by yours truly, Morgan, and special comments from the SAFDA Info Bro himself, Westy. So without further adieu let’s begin. The sun rose over the horizon in its usual bright manner (the sun doesn't seem to ever get out of bed on the wrong side, it's always full of energy and ready for the day), and shone light onto a wonderful morning. Mere wisps of cloud were to be seen up in the sky and a very light, if any, wind was blowing. Perfect conditions for a day of frisbee if ever there were any. It was a good turnout for such an early hour on a Saturday, with some people fighting off their hangovers to show up in a team costume. I'm pretty sure that some people had rolled out of bed in their PJs and stumbled into some sporting gear along the way, and decided to form a team in their own right, rather than put on some outlandish costume.

With a few quick words from Tournament Director "Booming" Fred Bowden, the Opening Ceremony was upon us. In ran former UE President John Salerno with the burning Torch, which has been travelling around the world in all the major frisbee locations, sharing the love and preparing for this momentous occasion. The Torch was used to light the bright orange frisbee held by current UE President Kelly Preston, whilst the UE moniker was being recreated with various club members. President Preston then threw to a flying Denis. It was a picture perfect moment, if only he hadn't of dropped it. The now flaming disc was used to set the Olympic Cauldron alight, in a majestic end to the Opening Ceremony.

So with the introductory guff out of the way, the games were on. First up were Help Save Us vs The Hungry Hucking Pyjama Players on Field 1 and Da Frizz Lets Get Physical vs Bad Habits on Field 2, whilst Die Fritz und Die Bratwurst were competing in the Disc Olympics. From a personal stand-point the return trip to the 80’s couldn’t pass soon enough to erase the images of Corey, Ollie and Oldie showing everyone exactly what they had to offer. However the games were close, they were filled with humorous antics and much fun was being had. The spirit was alive and well, particularly where ever the nun's were - they brought with them the Holy Spirit.

After two more games it was time for lunch. During the luncheon period the 90~100m sprints were run. Comprehensive winners were Karen and Joel who blew the competition away. It was a wonderful spread for lunch with a little something for everyone (provided they were in fact able to eat food), and how about the cheese? After devouring the lovely spread of sandwiches and chips, the Throw Run Catch competition was held. With some of the big name players unable to complete a catch, and some wonderful (and not so wonderful) attempts from others the grinning winners, Cath and K, walked away with much spring in their steps.

With two more games completed after lunch, it was proving an exhaustive exercise in wear and tear maintenance. It was late in the day and everyone was looking to get a move on. Especially those in tights, since word had spread that customs were about to crack down on a major budgie smuggling ring in the north parklands. The super hero's capes were not quite flying behind them as fully as they had been in the morning, however the never give up, efficient German's, were as rigid and methodical as they had been all day.

But we weren't done yet when the final siren rang. With the games completed, those who were left trundled over to watch the Disc Olympics finals. The three top finalists of each event were attempting to better their score during the day. The accuracy event was run first with Ali, Colleen and Cindy (the latter taking it out quite comfortably). The male version had Chris Palazzi, Oldy and, UE's only member accurate enough to get to the finals, Adam competing for glory.  After a first run through a sudden death play of ensued between Chris and Adam where Chris won by one throw.

In the meantime, the distance throwing events were taking place. It was getting quite dark and progress needed to be made. The competitions were tight and toughly contested but winners were (in no particular order): Becky, Becky, Cath, Joel, Joel and Morgan. As you can see, pretty one sided really.

With a pleasant yet slightly rushed wrap up, due to light restrictions and dinner beginning shortly, medals and trophies were handed out to deserving winners. Plenty of chocolate and gold were to be seen. The ending results were as follows:

Spirit: Da Frizz Lets Get Physical
Costume: Help Save Us
Best Female Costume: Catherine Coope
Best Male Costume: Peter Williams
Female MVP: Pam Woods
Male MVP: Chris Palazzi
OverallWinner: Da Frizz Lets Get Physical

Plenty of cheers and streamers were thrown in a likeness to a game show winner or World Cup soccer victory. As people dispersed and the light grew dimmer, smiles could be seen all around. While some were looking forward to a tasty dinner at the Alehouse, others found that, like the French with an egg for breakfast, they’d had an oueff and headed home. A wonderful day of activity to be remembered for a lifetime.

Plenty of photos are available for this event:

Pub Crawl

The pub crawl got off to a delicious start with many people opting to gorge themselves on the massive schnitzels on offer at the Coopers Ale House. Sando couldn’t quite fit his in, and Huy had adopted the kind of strict adherence to a diet that would have made the crazy Nuns earlier in the day very happy. We were joined there by the Disc Golfers who apparently had also had a very good day competing in the fine conditions. Word on the street was that one guy had even shot a 7-under.

After a short walk/drive to the German Club, sitting and talking seemed to the order of the day. There was not too much else happening there, but it was good to cool the heels and have a relaxing brew. Somewhere along the way a few people seemed to have gone off to fight crime on the mean streets of Adelaide.

The fine selection of cock rock available at the Griffin’s Head was given a thorough going over as we showed that while we may not be qualified dance instructors, some of us could possibly become qualified drinking instructors. Others chose to take it easy and just forget about trying to form cohesive sentences or use real words. At one point there was a sea of straws to be seen in just about everyone's hair, apparently the latest fad. Some people ran off to Church (apparently those Nun's really had an affect on people) for even better drink specials, whilst others (and it must be said that the numbers did seem to swell here) enjoyed the ambient 70's and 80's atmosphere of the video juke box. For this nun in particular, it was an interesting experience, gaining her first kiss on the mouth from a young man, who looked a lot like the super hero -Man Man. Perhaps it is just my faith being tested, but I was quite titillated.

Then it was off to Elysium were much grooving and hijinks were had. The slinky decor and ambient tunes provided all the necessary requirements for some fierce-some dance moves, which in turn provided much humour for those who preferred to sit on the sidelines (also chairs, couches and prostated monkeys). It was a very long day with the early start and an early finish, but there was a fine showing of strong character to stay out until the wee hours of the morning. All in all, a very enjoyable day.
