What is Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate is an exciting, non-contact team sport, played by thousands the world over. It mixes the best features of sports such as Soccer, Basketball, American Football and Netball into an elegantly simple yet fascinating and demanding game. To compete at the top level, Ultimate players require an unmatched degree of speed, stamina and agility.

Yet the simplicity of the rules means it's easy and fun for newcomers to pick up.

Oh, and by the way, it's played with a flying disc (a "Frisbee" to the man in the street).

A brief history of Ultimate Evolution
Part I - Genesis

Early scholars trace back the origins of SA Ultimate to one man:

Ben "Patches O'Houlihan" White
Visionary, master tactician and student of the game, Ben is credited with the one act most central to the founding of this modern club. A loosely captured transcript of his original email can be viewed here

Part II - The Early Days

Henceforth the popularity of the game grew. Several times a week players would congregate on the lawns for pick up games. Shirts were designed, tournaments hatched and engineers and scientists masquerading as athletes would become injured.

With popularity came the superstars and the greatest of them all was Rocket:

Rodney "Rocket" Barnes
Like most great athletes Rocket excelled at many sports and on the ultimate field he was king. Regarded by many as Ultimate royalty and legend, his endurance, vertical leap, game awareness and attack on the disc is unmatched by any player to have played in this state. Whereas the confines of immortality restricted Rocket's brilliance to the lunchtime fields, a new player was immerging who was to change the face of the club forever. Having even less hair, Kristan Pash made a valuable contribution to the first Ultimate Evolution team, aptly named the Discheads.

Kristan "K" Pash
A born leader, gifted athlete and Ultimate enthusiast, "K" was the driving force behind many early and current teams. Hard work, loyalty and commitment saw him lead SA Ultimate as President of the board and become one of the most complete players in the current league. Many past and current Ultimate Evolution players can attribute their level of skill and love of the game to Kristan Pash.
Flying in from the motherland circa 2001 Kevin Robinson was to play a vital role in the development of the new Discheads team.

Kevin "Benedict Arnold" Robinson
With prior international experience and skills built on years of training and development, Kev brought with him the drills and plays required to introduce new practitioners to the sport. An outspoken leader he will always be remembered for his free flowing play and use of what was to later be named the "Kev cut". With Kristan & Kev at the helm the Discheads were a formidable force and went on to win a number of tournament, league and spirit titles.

Part III - Unite The Clans

It was inevitable that eventually the rest of the world would catch up. Driven by individual talent, clinical finishing and recruiting, Flinders University led by Joel Pillar and Alec Deslandes were becoming a major power. With Kevin Robinson in the UK and Kristan Pash relegated to the sidelines with serious injury, results started to move unfavourably against the leagues leading team. Doubt started to set in and differing factions immerged. This could have all boiled over had it not been for the efforts of Mark Rutten.

Mark "Robert the Bruce" Rutten
Unheralded player, thinker and phenomenal diplomat, Mark had the skills and know how to create a team encompassing the needs of all. This team built up a training regime that would be the envy of all in the league, led by Bryce Dolman, Peter Williams and Ben White. The foundations were being set for something great to re-immerge.

Part IV - The General

With the introduction of the SA clubs policy in 2006 along came another to change the course of the club. Fred Bowden rolled up his sleeves for the task at hand.

Fred "The General" Bowden
Rallying the troops and putting together the foundations of what was to be the modern constitution of the club, he made Ultimate Evolution the reality it is today.
